Well, the Red Sox season is at an end, so the students of Boston can no longer go to a game for cheap. I will hand it to you though; the atmosphere at Fenway Park cannot be replaced. There is little to compare to the camaraderie and the sound of true New England sports fans voices echoing across the historic park. But hey, we got the patriots who are undefeated! That’s great news and Tom Brady is no doubt the greatest. We all know that to be true especially after their recent game winning drive against the New York Giants. Then there are the Bruins; they are doing okay this season sitting at 6th in the Atlantic division.
But let me break this down for you..The Boston Celtics are back! Over the last few years the team has been struggling in its rebuilding stage there is no doubt about that. In 2013, when Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce were traded to the Brooklyn Nets, it was the end of an era for sure. Not only did we lose two amazing players that brought us a championship, we also lost a lot of fans. The Celtics were a team worth watching whether you were a fan of basketball or not. Entertainment was the reason for that. Rajon Rondo makes the crazy no look pass to Ray Allen in the corner for an effortless three. Or dishes it to Paul Pierce where his craftiness would allow him to get to the basket. Lets not forget about Kevin Garnett’s energy after finishing an alley oop from one of his teammates. There was nothing like the Boston Celtics and the big three along side Rajon Rondo.
However, time has gone by and this season offers new life to the team in green. Players such as former All-Star and Champion David Lee have made his way to the team alongside Veteran Amir Johnson and Rookies, R.J Hunter and Terry Rozier. Not to mention the versatile Evan Turner, scorer Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, and second year player Marcus Smart have all found their niches on the team and are playing really well with players like Avery Bradley, Jared Sullinger and Kelly Olynyk who have been their longer than the others.
So why should you spend your time or money watching the Celtics? They are a perfect example of how to play as a team. Something this world often loses site of lately.
1. You can look at the team stats and see that there are only one or two players that have real impressive numbers. There are no selfish players on the team, which allows for a new player to have a great night each night, which also acts as an advantage against opponents when it comes down to matching up defensively.
2. There is no real difference between the starting line up and the bench. Minutes can go to any player on the team and the starting line up changes frequently. This is good for us fans because we know that when our starters need a rest during a close game, we are not losing anything.
3. Everybody loves an under dog. There is no denying that! The Celtics were projected to not do so well this season, as they are still in a rebuilding phase. This however, did not stop Coach Brad Stevens and his Celts from stepping it up. They are one of the top five teams defensively this year and score more points on turnovers than 90% of the league. They are playing with a chip on their shoulder and it is always fun to watch a team play to prove people wrong.
4. The Celtics are the most successful Boston sports team of all time. That is correct. I know this age, we see the Patriots as the unstoppable force, and the Red Sox with the occasional World Series, or even the Bruins. However, the loyalty of Boston Sports Fans should start with the team that has the most championships. The Celtics have 17 Championships and more on the way. The next closest team with as many is the Boston Red Sox with 8 and then the Bruins with 6 followed by the Patriots with 4. Impressive for the Celtics but also impressive for New England being second in total sports championships behind New York.
5. There is more to come. The Celtics gained a lot for the future when they got rid of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo. This will be very important next year because they have Brooklyn’s first round pick in the 2016 draft. This pick is unprotected meaning we can have their pick even if it is in the top 5 selections. If we chose to trade this draft pick we will most likely get a very valuable deal for it. Either way, this is a win for the Celtics future!
6. You don’t have to know the rules of basketball to enjoy or understand the game, which makes it enjoyable for anybody!
7. Finally! These tickets can start at as low as 20 dollars each! The great thing about that is that there are no bad seats in the garden and a cheap ticket to their games is a lot closer than any other event with the exception of the Bruins. The Celtics also offer many deals throughout the season. For example, this year they are doing Guys/Girls Night Out deals. These include 4 Loge seat tickets, 1 beverage glass for each ticket and $20 concession money per person. The TD Garden where the Celtics and Bruins call home, is easily accessible to anyone in and out of the city, considering it is located at the North Station train stop.
