Looking for a way to get good exercise, save money, commute, and be adventurous? You can cover all that ground with a bicycle.

It wasn’t until I discovered cycling when I experienced a lot of sites and scents for the first time. The up-close encounters with an unseen, yet nearby skunk filling my nostrils with nothing but its stench, and no car window to protect from its full effect. (But don’t worry, you get the same experience with flowers and stuff too!) Or witnessing the amazing reflexes of squirrels and chipmunks as they play a classic game of Frogger across the road using their incredible quickness to avoid being hit by passing cars while simultaneously giving me a mini heart attack.

Then there are the Turkey’s that you have to chase off the road…

Anyways, I come from a town called Sandwich (laugh all you want), but this town gives me the opportunity to see the ocean on almost any bike ride. This is something that keeps me motivated to keep riding and find new routes. Pushing yourself to nice views is the best way to do it. Or by killing yourself in order to beat a Strava time is fun too.

Once you hop onto “Natures Broomstick” you can take it anywhere you would like, and there is no gas money wasted! It is the best way to answer questions you have always had such as “I wonder what is down that street.”

Riding almost every day this summer not only got me in good shape but also kept my overall happiness at a high and gave me something to look forward to that was not Netflix. I encourage anyone who is able to, to hop on a bike and start exploring and pushing yourself. Signing up for events also gives you the opportunity to ride for a cause. Each year there are hundreds of events that support charities and organizations of your choosing.

Whether it is competitively or just for the fun of it, just ride. But remember, “It never gets easier, you just get faster”- Greg LeMond

And if any of you DO cycle, feel free to stop and talk about it, spread the word and get more people on bikes!
