What are three things that college students look for in a place to eat? It’s tasty. It’s cheap. It’s not too busy.

Here’s a little secret: The best Japanese food is in Porter Square. Here’s how you find it: Go to Porter, and into the Lesley Education building. There’s a city sports and a book store. You want to walk in, past the stairs, and go to the left, behind the entrance to Blue Fin.

You’ll be greeted with a tiny kingdom of Japanese restaurants. There’s a bakery with mochi (ice cream in dough), Cafe Mami, Tampopo, Ittyo and Sapporo. All of it is good. Sometimes you may have to wait a little while, but it’s worth it. Everything’s under ten dollars too.

The downside is that the restaurants are tiny (under 10 people per), so it’s good for a date or for getting lunch with a small group of people, but think twice before bringing the whole crew.

I like the Ramen atĀ Tampopo. Actually, I like everything at Tampopo. Dig in!
